The story then goes back to the moment she was forced to flee Dublin, at the end of the First World War, and follows her life through into the new world of America, a world filled with both hope and danger. At once epic and intimate, Lilly’s narrative unfurls as she tries to make sense of the sorrows and troubles of her life and of the people whose lives she has touched. Spanning nearly seven decades, it is a novel of memory, war, family-ties and love, which once again displays Sebastian Barry’s exquisite prose and gift for storytelling.

The Books Awards are about to undergo some major changes as we integrate with our sister site AcclaimedBooks.com. Both will take on a new look in the coming weeks and there will be changes to the way you can vote as well as more reviews and we'll be interviewing your favourite authors.

Over the years, we've seen many books of different genres attract votes but we've noticed the vast majority fall into just a few categories. So we've also decided to focus upon these and in the next few weeks, you'll see what these are. We're also opening a discussion forum so you can exchange your thoughts on these books and others, authors or tell others about your latest find.

There's a lot going on so why not book mark this blog or better still, set up an RSS feed to let you know as soon as the latest news is released.

The winner for July is ....

In the late summer of 1913 the aristocratic young poet Cecil Valance comes to stay at ‘Two Acres’, the home of his close Cambridge friend George Sawle. The weekend will be one of excitements and confusions for all the Sawles, but it is on George’s sixteen-year-old sister Daphne that it will have the most lasting impact, when Cecil writes her a poem which will become a touchstone for a generation, an evocation of an England about to change for ever.

Linking the Sawle and Valance families irrevocably, the shared intimacies of this weekend become legendary events in a larger story, told and interpreted in different ways over the coming century, and subjected to the scrutiny of critics and biographers with their own agendas and anxieties. In a sequence of widely separated episodes we follow the two families through startling changes in fortune and circumstance.

At the centre of this often richly comic history of sexual mores and literary reputation runs the story of Daphne, from innocent girlhood to wary old age. Around her Hollinghurst draws an absorbing picture of an England constantly in flux. As in The Line of Beauty, his impeccably nuanced exploration of changing taste, class and social etiquette is conveyed in deliciously witty and observant prose. Exposing our secret longings to the shocks and surprises of time, The Stranger’s Child is an enthralling novel from one of the finest writers in the English language.

June Winner!

Winner of the Man Booker Prize 2009 'Lock Cromwell in a deep dungeon in the morning,' says Thomas More, 'and when you come back that night he'll be sitting on a plush cushion eating larks' tongues, and all the gaolers will owe him money.' England, the 1520s. Henry VIII is on the throne, but has no heir. Cardinal Wolsey is his chief advisor, charged with securing the divorce the pope refuses to grant. Into this atmosphere of distrust and need comes Thomas Cromwell, first as Wolsey's clerk, and later his successor. Cromwell is a wholly original man: the son of a brutal blacksmith, a political genius, a briber, a charmer, a bully, a man with a delicate and deadly expertise in manipulating people and events. Ruthless in pursuit of his own interests, he is as ambitious in his wider politics as he is for himself. His reforming agenda is carried out in the grip of a self-interested parliament and a king who fluctuates between romantic passions and murderous rages. From one of our finest living writers, 'Wolf Hall' is that very rare thing: a truly great English novel, one that explores the intersection of individual psychology and wider politics. With a vast array of characters, and richly overflowing with incident, it peels back history to show us Tudor England as a half-made society, moulding itself with great passion, suffering and courage.

This month's winner!

Readers of epic fantasy series are: (1) patient--they are left in suspense between each volume, (2) persistent--they reread or at least review the previous book(s) when a new instalment comes out, (3) strong--these 700-page doorstoppers are heavy, and (4) mentally agile--they follow a host of characters through a myriad of subplots. In A Game of Thrones, the first book of a projected six, George R.R. Martin rewards readers with a vividly real world, well-drawn characters, complex but coherent plotting, and beautifully constructed prose, which Locus called "well above the norms of the genre."
Martin's Seven Kingdoms resemble England during the Wars of the Roses, with the Stark and Lannister families standing in for the Yorks and Lancasters. The story of these two families and their struggle to control the Iron Throne dominates the foreground; in the background is a huge, ancient wall marking the northern border, beyond which barbarians, ice vampires, and direwolves menace the south as years-long winter advances. Abroad, a dragon princess lives among horse nomads and dreams of fiery reconquest.

April Winner!

The Land of Painted Caves concludes the story of Ayla, her mate Jondalar, and their little daughter, Jonayla, taking readers on a journey of discovery and adventure as Ayla struggles to find a balance between her duties as a new mother and her training to become a Zelandoni - one of the Ninth Cave community's spiritual leaders and healers. Once again, Jean Auel combines her brilliant narrative skills and appealing characters with a remarkable re-creation of the way life was lived thousands of years ago, rendering the terrain, dwelling places, longings, beliefs, creativity and daily lives of Ice Age Europeans as real to the reader as today's news.

The March Winner!

The Hand That First Held Mine

A gorgeously written story of love and motherhood, this is a tour de force from one of our best loved novelists.

When the sophisticated Innes Kent turns up on her doorstep, Lexie Sinclair realises she cannot wait any longer for her life to begin, and leaves for London. There, at the heart of the 1950s Soho art scene, she carves out a new life. In the present day, Elina and Ted are reeling from the difficult birth of their first child. Elina struggles to reconcile the demands of motherhood with sense of herself as an artist, and Ted is disturbed by memories of his own childhood that don't tally with his parents' version of events. As Ted begins to search for answers, an extraordinary portrait of two women is revealed, separated by fifty years, but connected in ways that neither could ever have expected.

New Voting and Nomination Rules

In order to improve our service, we no longer accept email nominations, or email votes, for books in the monthly Book Awards competition. Our reasons are given below and the new procedure is as follows (this can also be found on the website).

To Nominate a title, locate the book on Amazon and find "Tags Customers Associate with This Product". Look for a tag which follows the following format;

tbaMonthYear - for example, any book nominated for February 2011 would be as follows;
tba0211

or in March; tba0311 and so on.

So 'tba' in lower case (it will default to this anyway), the month as 2 digits with a 0 first if needed, and the year simply the last two digits. We may have to revise the year code at the turn of the century!

If the tag exists, simply add your click to vote for it (you may sometimes have to click 'See all tags..' if there are several). If it doesn't, just create it by 'adding your first tag' as indicated. That will nominate the book for others to see and add your vote. NB Please put the current month when you place your vote, not the month of the award!

It's that easy!
Amazon have a 'What's this?' hyper link if you aren't sure and you will need to log on to your account and have made a purchase at some time in the past for your vote to count.

So why the changes?

First of all, we don't like to collect email addresses in case anyone thinks they will be used for spam, and with this system you don't need to email anything. Secondly, it greatly speeds up processing at our end and we like anything that makes our lives easier! Amazon filters the tags/votes which will ensure it's still one vote per person. Voters can still support several titles and we hope to maintain the traditional balance between new and well known authors.

An aesthetic revamp is still needed in the, not too distant, future but we wanted to sort out the mechanics of how it will work first. We hope you approve and will continue supporting your favourite authors.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

New winner and new rules!

The winner this month is 'One Day' by David Nicholls, a highly popular author perhaps best known for his 'Starter for Ten'.

'I can imagine you at forty,' she said, a hint of malice in her voice. We knew Hitler was intent on world domination and we knew the Argentinians had invaded sovereign territory but who really knew if there were weapons of mass destruction secreted in the deserts of Iraq? Sometimes there are just too many 'expert' opinions but someone had to decide on this and the many other less consequential issues of office. Tony Blair explains his views on the period of economic growth and political turmoil that characterised his term as Britain's Prime Minister.

Mary

The Book Awards

Back from the break and the Summer winner is .......... !

The Book of Ebenezer Le Page by G B Edwards accumulated the most votes this summer and is one of my personal favourites (I've already reviewed it here).

This classic is written in an autobiographic style although Ebenezer is entirely fictional. It is set on the island of Guernsey and covers much of the twentieth century including two wars and, of course, the German Occupation of the islands. As Ebenezer is supposedly writing the book himself, the real author may be excused a host of literary and typographical errors - neat trick GB!

Nonetheless, a highly enjoyable read, no doubt benefiting from increased popularity due to the best selling 'Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' which is also set in Guernsey during the Occupation.

In my view, Ebenezer is a far more authentic account and is certainly regarded as such by the locals of the island.

The Winner of the May Awards Announced!

The Book Awards winner for May 2010 is 'The Lovely Bones' by Alice Sebold.

I was about to shy away from this story which on the surface appeared a little gruesome for my taste but I'm very pleased I looked further and experienced the world as 'Susie' saw it. Perhaps this is typical of so many artists and authors who fail to receive just acclaim during their lifetime.

'Ebenezer Le Page' by G. B. Edwards is the 'Lark Rise to Candleford' of my trio and eminently more enjoyable for my taste. The story of Ebenezer is the whole adult life of a man entrenched in the ethos of a community isolated and excluded then invaded and occupied by the Germans in the second World War. He is dry and astute maintaining narrow interests with strong opinions, very much the Guernsey 'Donkey' of stubborn but forthright attributes. The man and the book are vividly accurate portrayals of the period and society on the island of Guernsey in the twentieth century and it rightfully earns it's place as the bench mark in Guernsey literature.

My only caution would be that, like Lark Rise to Candleford, it can be somewhat laborious in places. True, you are completely immersed and to a non-local this may be an uplifting experience in itself. However, in common with my next choice, the prose overwhelms the plot and this is a book to read for comfort and appreciation rather than thrills or emotional contrasts.

Who could deny the justifiable popularity of 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society'?

A beautifully written book by Mary Ann Shafer and published after her passing by her niece. This book is not like Ebenezer in that it lacks the local voice which one cannot help feeling is drowned by a pleasing but unauthentic New England lilt. No 'Le Pages' here and the author's fleeting single visit was insufficient to capture the 'under the surface' culture of the island. However, she did manage to capture the atmosphere of the period under German wartime occupation accurately and with sensitivity. This no doubt accounts largely for the success of this novel as many around the world had no idea that this tiny part of Britain, so close to France, was occupied. The epistolary form of this novel works well enough as a device which allows the author to build colourful characters in the absence of a compelling story line. This is achieved successfully and many content readers barely notice the fact. I was so taken up by the characters, I only really missed a plot after I finished and reflected upon what I had read.

Finally 'Rachel's Shoe' is the story of a young Jewish girl rescued from the German labour camp on the island of Alderney, once again during the occupation, by a local boy himself fleeing from the soldiers. Rachel's Shoe spans around thirty years and the starkest contrast with my two earlier selections is the riveting story line. This is a book you won't put down and long after you finish the taste will linger on. Peter Lihou lacks the finesse of both G B Edwards and Mary Ann Shafer, but this is like comparing John Grisham with Jane Austen. Personally, I have room for both in my library. I grew fond of the main characters and the villain made my skin crawl. I cried when the island was liberated and my head spun as the story continued into the 1970s.

Out of the three, Rachel's Shoe is the one that left me wanting a sequel most, just as well as sadly the other authors are no longer able to oblige. Don't misunderstand, I truly enjoyed Ebenezer's pithy local realism and the Potato Peel Pie completely satisfied my appetite. But second helpings? No I think not, another plate of pie would be too much for me and I think I now know all I need to about my dear friend Ebenezer. Rachel and Tom on the other hand, well that's another matter, I very much look forward to meeting them again, despite the well crafted conclusion, there is unfinished business for me here.

Kate Cavendish
2009 Literary Review
The Book Awards.com

The October Book Awards Winner is Announced!

The most popular title with our readers last month was 'Priestess of the Forest: A Druid Novel' by Ellen Evert Hopman.

It was a very close vote with some 'big names' from the literary world very close to winning. The name change was because a suggestion had been made that we were trading off the name of Amazon.com. That was true because the site began life years ago as a fully approved part of the Amazon Associate program. We also used the Amazon 'aStore' to list nominations for our months awards. Changing the name has killed any reasonable suggestion that we are trading off the Amazon name. However, the change of layout and ceasing use of the 'aStore' has made it harder for our visitors to purchase our nominated or winning titles, which has not gone down well with the authors or visitors. We have therefore decided to return to using an Amazon 'aStore' to list our nominations and past winners and the site has been updated to reflect this.

We don't intend to change the name again as we believe there are no contentious issues with The Book Awards - that's what they are!

This month has seen a lot of activity and changes in position, so much so that with just a few days to run, I still wouldn't put money on the winning title for October.

Keep those votes coming!

Shorts are fine!

Stories that is, not the kind you wear, at least not in my neck of the woods as Autumn draws in!

The short story competition has attracted some excellent entries and it's going to be tough for the judges to decide.
